A 20s - revue was what the Studierendenwerk Freiburg (SWFR) wanted from its student MONDO music theater for its centenary last year. Due to the pandemic, the show could only be shown live on stage two times. This summer now, there will be a revival of this great production with a new student cast: 1921 – Eleven female and three male students join forces to sing and dance against poverty and hunger, against discrimination, homesickness and other social and emotional needs. They are bold and modern, open-minded... and above all quite crazy. They found a student cabaret and from then on surprise the Freiburg audience in their revues with snappy songs and hot dance numbers.
2022 – fourteen students join forces to take account of student commitment in difficult times. They immerse themselves in the 1920s, develop their own characters, revive wonderful music with their dances as well as a little zeitgeist and play fast and enjoyable from one great number to the next.
The MONDO Music Theatre of the Studierendenwerk Freiburg takes you back to the wild 20s in a fast-paced and entertaining way and makes connections to student life 101 years ago. Because the attitude to life of the 1920s, a time in which you could not hold on to anything and which pulled the floor from under your feet, unfortunately proves to be all too topical in 2022.

The "Mondo Musical Group" (as it was called then) was founded in 2007 on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the University of Freiburg. The Studierendenwerk (SWFR) produced the musical revue "The Show" as a birthday present to the Uni. Under the direction of the theatre director Jesse Coston and the musical direction of Dominik Hormuth, "The Show" was performed by 30 students on a huge open-air stage as part of the anniversary celebrations. The success was huge and since then MONDO has been delighting Freiburg audiences with a changing student ensemble and new productions every year.
Under the direction of director Stephanie Heine, the participating students receive professional instruction in acting, dancing and singing and actively shape the creative process - from an initial play idea to the finished stage production. They contribute their own ideas and perspectives, write dialogues, select musical pieces and design the stage set. The result is music theater with a local and student connection, authentic, young and real. Around 1800 spectators see the annual performances in the MensaBar. Imaginatively staged, they always come across as original and witty, fresh and cheeky, bubbling over with playfulness and at an astonishingly high level of singing and dancing. The shows are accompanied live by the MONDO Musical Band, which plays newly arranged hits from rock, pop and musicals as well as melodies composed especially for the play.
